I’m a Sacramento photographer, wife, mama, and the person behind Amy Medina Photography.
I’ve always been drawn to the connection between people and all the little things that make a family feel like them. Of course I want to give you the beautiful photo where everyone is looking and smiling, but I’m also watching for everything happening in between.
The way your little one reaches for your hand. The belly laughs. The snuggles. The personalities that come out once everyone forgets we're taking pictures.
Those are often the photographs that end up meaning the most.
What I’m like behind the camera
I’m definitely not going to stand across the field quietly waiting for the magic to happen.
I’ll give you direction, tell you where to put your hands, fix your hair, hype you up, chase your kids, make ridiculous noises for smiles, and keep everyone moving when we need to. You never have to show up knowing how to pose or wondering what you’re supposed to do next. That’s my job.
And your kids? They don’t need to be perfectly behaved.
I fully expect a little chaos. I’ll meet them where they are, match their energy, give them room to play, and somehow we’ll make a little magic out of it.
My sessions are a mix of guided portraits, movement, play, and all those little moments that happen when everyone stops worrying quite so much about the camera.
A little more about me
When I’m not behind the camera, most of my days right now are spent keeping up with my toddler daughter, playing whatever she decides we’re playing that day, and happily being bossed around by her.
I love cooking, being around the water whenever I get the chance, and slowing things down when I have a weekend off. Most of the time, that looks pretty simple: quality time with my family, going to the farmer's market, cooking a good meal, and ending the night with a family game night.
Motherhood has definitely changed the way I see the seasons of family life. My days are busy and sometimes chaotic, but I also know this version of our life won’t last forever. I think that’s part of why I’m so drawn to documenting families exactly where they are right now.
Why these photographs matter so much to me
Family changes in tiny ways that are almost impossible to notice while they’re happening.
One day you pick your child up without thinking twice about it, and eventually there will be a last time they fit that way in your arms.
Their little expressions change. Their hands get bigger. Their personalities grow. The way your family looks and feels right now won’t stay exactly like this forever.
That’s what I want to hold onto for you.
Not perfection. Not a family that suddenly knows exactly how to behave in front of a camera.
